Sidewalk cafes, second-hand shops, bikers and rollerbladers, an amusement park and a craft market make St. Kilda a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. It is just a 25-minute ride from downtown aboard any of the "St. Kilda Beach" trams that go by.

Guidebooks say St. Kilda is Melbourne's Playground, and even on a gray and drizzly early spring day, there are lots of Melburnians out trying to put winter behind them. The spring flowers havent pushed up yet, but colorful pink and purple winter cabbage added color to flower beds, while brilliantly colored lorikeets worked on their nests in the neighborhood's many date palms.

In search of work by local artisans at the weekly craft market on the esplanade. Lots of beautiful work at great prices, especially considering the exchange rate to the US dollar. find a great selection of Australian animals made from hand-dug local clay,admired this same artisan's work at a gallery near the Queen Victoria Market earlier in the day at twice the price. Getting to meet the artist and hear about her techniques make the treasures even more valuable. One can also find a selection of hand-sewn wool toys shaped like wombats and koalas that are perfect gifts for the tiniest tots back home, and a beautiful lathe-turned peppermill made from the wood of a red gum tree made the ideal Australian addition to the mill collection.

Next, off to find lunch and, seeing the cafes so packed with people, one can decide to get some take-away fish and chips and sit down near the water. St. Kilda Beach is lapped by the waves of Port Phillip Bay, and an unusual-looking lighthouse make for a nice backdrop to a quiet lunch.

Or else busy eateries abound everywhere along the promenade, from fish and chips on the grass to the classy Sea Baths restaurants that form a mall like enclosure with magnificent views of the bay and city skyline that is Melbourne

Most people are familiar with the amusement park at Coney Island, New York, but did you know that the same folks also built a couple of parks in Australia too? Luna Park in St. Kilda was constructed in 1912, and was completely renovated and restored in 1999. Though it was closed for the season during our visit, the gaping clown mouth that forms the entrance to the park made for some great photos, and we enjoyed learning about the Coney Island and Sydney Luna Parks, too.

If one has more than a couple of hours to spend in this area, do some exploring, as the architecture on neighborhood streets is extremely appealing, as are some of the many restaurants and shops. If not Next time!

IF you get bored of sitting in the sun and staring at the amazing sun set, there are restaurants and lots of shopping around on Fitzroy St and Acland St…A must visit!!!!!

Try the pancakes at Greasy Joe’s or step into a cosy drink fest in the Vineyard…lots to fill you in one day. Or rent a bike or roller blades and ride along the bike lane and check out the beautiful coast. The bike trail goes all the way to Frankston. So if you are up for it, ride all the way…it’s beautiful

Cycle or skate along St Kilda’s palm-lined foreshore then make a dash for an alfresco dining table on Fitzroy or Acland streets against the panoramic backdrop of Port Phillip Bay.

St Kilda, Melbourne’s favourite playground, was once a seaside resort for genteel Melburnians to take the sea air. In the 1960s and 1970s it took on a seedier edge, but today its racy atmosphere has largely been replaced by a heady dose of cosmopolitan cool.

Any tram with St Kilda beach displayed from Bourke, Swanston or Collins streets will get you here to join the Melburnians who flock to walk, cycle and skate along the foreshore. Take advantage of a windy day and dive into the water to sail, windsurf or kitesurf. Release your inner child amid the amusements and rides at iconic Luna Park. When its time to rest, sit in an outdoor café with a coffee – or something a little stronger.

Away from the foreshore, you'll find much of St Kilda's activity concentrated in Fitzroy and Acland streets. Fitzroy Street is renowned for its cool cafés, restaurants and bars, with tables spilling onto the footpath. It is one of Melbourne's most attractive eating and drinking streets. Nearby Acland Street is a bustling, vibrant street with an eclectic mix of restaurants, wine bars and continental cake shops. During the day the streets are lined with people drinking lattes; at night they're buzzing with clubbers and night owls making the most of the pubs, bars and clubs often featuring international bands or DJs.

St Kilda has long been treasured for its independent vibe. Don’t miss the selection of independent music and book stores, as well as second-hand furniture and a growing collection of fashion boutiques.
